boredom

I'm wondering whether what I write about on here is all that interesting? I've felt a bit bored myself recently...not sure if that's a response to a busy, hectic and exciting summer and the getting back to reality...or something else...

I have had 2 terrible migraines this week which didn't feel too nice...never had one before so two was a bit of a bummer. Took Wednesday off to recuperate on my own at home which I kinda enjoyed - full of boring activities like washing, ironing and tidying piles of paper. Essential but boring and satisfying all at the same time.

Overall it's been a quiet week work wise which has given me the space to relax and try and remove any stress causing the headaches...but the pressure pumps up from now on as various training courses I am delivering start next weekend and Andy P and I are working together on some events across the Diocese. (my) Andy starts his Street Pastors training in November, which does give me some enforced time at home as we've made a decision to try not to add to Matilda's other childcare hours. Matilda and I are having fun together at the minute as he vocabularly increases each day - she also has a very dirty giggle and she laughs a lot which makes me laugh, which makes her laugh...

Tonight we have all the children's and youth work leaders from church over for an Indaba - a swahili word meaning gathering, fellowship, discussion. We want to gather this team together in our role as coordinators and feed them lovely desserts (!) and begin to develop vision and team to take the youth work forward in a fresh way. So I'm looking forward to tonight and have made a lemon and lime cheesecake and baked chocolate cake this afternoon to get the creative juices flowing a bit better!! This is an aspect of church which is feeling good at the minute - our church is going through a tough period at the minute with lots of pressure on relationships as well as growth meaning that aspects of our work and outreach are under pressure. We had a great time on Sunday night with our youth cell - Giraffe - who hosted a surprise birthday party for one of the group...house full of teenagers, food, party popper debris and silly games...real good fun!

So, even if my life seems a bit boring from the outside, or from a blog perspective - I'm quite enjoying it...the lull before the storm!

post equipping

5 session in and I'm finally realising that the week following Equipping sessions are a bit of an uphill struggle! I LOVE doing the course - it's always better than I imagine it will be as I plan and above all hearing the stories and examples of youth ministry going on across the Area and Diocese are so encouraging. Keeps my feet on the ground...however, I am knackered now and with only 1 night in last week and a busy Sunday, I could do with a proper, sleep filled day off!

Unfortunately, not something that will happen til Thursday now...

Not such a busy week this week, but none the less full of things to do. I begin a series of termly youth leader forums across the Deaneries tonight, starting in Basildon (Southend are next Tuesday 30th and Hadleigh on 8th October). These are another great way to get together with those who are doing the stuff with young people, and being able to resource, support and encourage them is one of the best bits of my job.

I'm also covering a bit of work in the Colchester area while it is in vacancy and going to see a parish about employing a youth worker and encouraging youth outreach in their rural context.

I've not commented so far on the recent 'fall' of prominent church leaders across the world. Todd Bentley and the Florida healing outpouring has featured on this blog before and over the summer, things kinda fell apart with the revelation of his 'emotional' relationship with another woman and the separation from his wife. Along with another Australian youth minister, and other less high profile christian leaders there has been a series of confessions, exposures and disclosures which have rocked many people, churches and ministries, not least us here in Maldon. It's disappointing, but not surprising that in a time when there are pressures on people around finances, housing, futures that these things should happen, as they always have done. Our church is coming under pressure in many areas, relationships, finance, morality and what seems to characterise this period is a level of grace and a season of understanding which is allowing these things to come into the light and be exposed and be made clean. We had a powerful word in church a couple of weeks ago about how God is making his bride spotless for himself and I believe that is part of the process. It's rubbish, hard, disheartening, but God is faithful, powerful, loving and desperate to see his church and people restored.

Now I don't know where you readers of mine stand on issues of prophecy and prophetic words of knowledge. I post this example as a discussion starter and to make you think. Sharon Stone is a woman of God, of that there is no doubt and this prophetic word given to her was spoken in August 08, before recent world events unfolded.

This is what she wrote in the email forwarded to me last week:

Just hours ago we received this e-mail from a lady who attended a meeting at which I spoke this summer.  The dramatic events that have unfolded this week in the US and within the past 24 hours here in the UK resonate with the truth God spoke through this word.  I want to share this with you in light of these events as an encouragement that the Lord is faithful to His Word and He has made both provision and a way.

Blessings in Christ,

Dr. Sharon Stone

Dear Sharon and Greg,

I thought you might be interested in seeing this prophesy you gave in Glasgow this summer.  While I was in prayer this morning God reminded me that I scribed this on the Sunday morning you were with us.  I don’t know how much you keep up on world news but there is a freight train fire in the Chunnel right now.  And on the 29th of August Sarah Palin was introduced as

John McCain’s vice presidential running mate from Alaska .  Also XL Airlines has just halted its flights because it could not find a lender and people on holiday are stranded all over.  Last week the UK government cancelled council taxes for the purchase of homes under 200,000 pounds for a year.  Isn’t God amazing!

Your Sister in Christ,

Lisa Gibbs

Prophecy given by Dr. Sharon Stone, Glasgow , Summer, 2008

“September is a turning point and a sign of the times.  It is all about those who have made Godly alignments in this season being blessed with revelation and information in the midst of world crisis.

“I see more banks will suffer: a USA world bank’s shares are in trouble - I see government in the USA bailing out mortgage giants and the government in England cutting house purchase taxes for the sagging housing crisis, to no avail.  I see a European airline failing with no notice.  I see the eyes of the world looking to see, ‘who is this coming out of Alaska ?’  And I see smoke coming from the Chunnel.

“As I see these things I hear the encouragement of God to His Isaacs in the earth who sow in the times of famine and reap 100 fold in the year.  I’m not a prosperity preacher, I’m a prophet.  And God is saying that September will convince you that you must connect to His economic system.  There are always the few that are greatly blessed when the majority are shaken, threatened and fearful.

“God says, ‘Have you positioned yourself for THE NEW?  Your storehouse is not an earthly bank.  Hold on and I will bail you out of your mortgage issues.  Am I not better to you than any government?  I will not leave you stranded on foreign soil, and I will carry you above the circumstances better than any plane or jet.  And your hope is not an Alaskan saviour, but Me. ’ I know that sounds strange, it does to me also.

“ England , the smoke I saw coming out of the Chunnel is a warning for your intercessors to arise and cut off the enemy’s plan to sabotage and siege  England 's favour in trade.  Let him who has ears hear.

“God I release an Isaac anointing upon us now!”

alternative worship at CGC!

It was exciting to be part of a bit of an experiment this Sunday at church - a bit of an alternative way of doing things...no sermon, central communion table, different 'station' and activities to get people thinking, doing, praying and worshipping all around 'how can I love God?'.

admin and procrastination

why do these 2 things usually go together in my life? I've had a much needed 2 days solely in the office, trying to break the back of a few projects which are coming up cos I know I won't have time from next week...despite this I can't seem to apply myself as diligently as I should. Like most people I suppose, I work better under pressure and seem to find myself mostly working under pressure. The luxury of 2 clear diary days has rather thrown me!

I'm working on a Deanery Synod presentation/workshop for tomorrow night (the most pressing task today!) and just thinking that actually, I never tire of these kinds of engagements. I know Deanery Synods are pretty much the biggest yawn out, but everyone knows that and they do have to happen...being invited to speak gives me the opportunity to do things a little different - people expect that from a Youth Adviser! Also, how else can I get my message out there? - it may be that many of those who sit in front of me don't really want to do youth work in their churches or community themselves right now, but they are the ones who make decisions, say yes or no at PCC's and fundamentally have a lot of power and influence. I want to keep them on side. In the early days of my role, when I was fishing for work and had a constantly empty diary (as well as being pregant and very sick!!) Deanery Synods, Chapters, PCC's and other clergy meetings were my bread and butter - they got me known and enabled me to get to grips with the geography, culture and differences across this Area.

So, aside from that little job, I've been clearing a back log, doing some preparation for the next Equipping session next week (Challenging Behaviour) and  ordering some new storage solutions for my overflowing office and resources cupboard! When I will get a chance to actually clear out and re-sort, I'm not really sure!

Since I have confessed my procrastination and used a blog post to postpone proper work a little longer, I probably ought to get back to it - and here's a cute pic of my daughter just to make you say aaah! (another couple of minutes gazing!!)

"are you having a giraffe"?

Just before the summer, Andy and I took on the (volunteer) role of Youth Ministry Coordinators at our church. It's been a process for us, since we moved down here of working out where we fitted best in the life of our church and Andy took on a role as youth cell (14+) leader last year. Through quite a bit of prayer and a number of different circumstances, we knew the time was right to take on this new role together and progress the discipleship and depth of CGC Maldon's youth ministry. Exciting stuff...

So, last night, our group of lovely teenagers met for the first time this academic year with both Andy and I as overall leaders, along with the other leaders who form our team. Amongst other things - including fizz, krispy cakes and a questionnaire with random question - we had a great discussion and vote on a new name - 'youth cell' sounded a bit too much like a detention centre!

So, we're please to announce that from now on, youth cell, meeting Sunday nights at our place will be called GIRAFFE. Are you having a...?

weight update

well, despite 3 weeks in America with little or no thought to restraint, I managed to maintain my weight. I also, amazingly lost a pound during Falcon Camp where my main diet was porridge, cooked breakfast, sandwiches and crisps and a full cokked dinner with chips and stuff on the side. I think the nervous energy of keeping an eye on 22 tweenagers and 10 leaders probably helped. So, I'm now at 14 stone 9lb and starting afresh with the new academic year!

We had an amazing time in America, such a great time away with one another as a little family of 3 and also with great friends and making new ones. We loved New York, but everyone does really (I've been before and it was fun to show Andy round) but we really loved Tennessee, which was a bit of a surprise. Beautiful scenery, river, cool dinky city of Knoxville and lots of culture with food, arts, history and music abounding.

It really was back to earth with a bump last Tuesday, especially as I had picked something up on plane and am suffering with the after effects of sinusitis which is pretty pants and I feel like my head is full of tissue.

So, we're back with renewed vigour, ready to take on the challenges of life, work, church and all that God has in store! It's good to be home (but we quite liked America too!!)

Falcon Afloat 2008

I'm a bit pooped to write too much right now, but Falcon Afloat has been brilliant. A fantastic group of 18 young people aged 10-13, with so much excitement, enthusiasm and with so much potential. The team we had gathered were amazing, coupled with the on board team who led some of our activities. It was a pleasure to be part of a vibrant Christian community and to work alongside amazing people of all ages.

We even had a flood yesterday to fit with our Noah theme!

So here are some tasters of the week in photo form - and we do it all again in 2009 - 26-30 July!! Book now!

off to falcon afloat

Falcon_afloat_logo_type_01

well, after months of planning, thinking, praying, hoping and stressing - Falcon is almost afloat!

We have 17 kids booked in, 10 Falcon leaders plus instructers from our venue and a great programme planned with excellent games, teaching, activities, trip to the zoo, plus food, sleeping on a boat and other things which I am sure will be brilliant and unplanned!! as always!

We passionate about Falcon Camps and having been part of a team in Scarborough for nearly 7 years, it's really exciting to be Overall Leaders for the first time on a camp here in Essex. It's going to be great seeing God at work in these young people's lives and we know for many of them this will be a life changing experience. We're blessed to have a team with us who have come together in an amazing way - some we know really well (like Ruth our bridesmaid who is on a Falcon for the first time and Sally and Stephen who we;ve served with on Scaborough for years) and others we have met and got to know only recently (like Jenn and Ben, work colleagues of our friend Christine and Alex, brother of another Falcon leader who happens to live in Maldon!)

So please pray for us from this Sunday 27th July-31st July and we'll let you know how we get on!

stuck

stuck on 14lb 9 this week - my lively WW leader suggested it might be to do with wearing jeans this week but I'm pretty certain it was the skinny blueberry muffin in Debenhams and the lovely avocado on 1 too many occasions....although she did tell me that avocado is good fat!

Onwards and downwards - weight wise I mean!

July 15, 2008

I'm losing it!

Went to my 2nd weigh in last night and have lost 3.5 pounds! Yay!

Really pleased with myself, but also enjoying it, planning meals, interesting variety and not difficult to fit it around summer BBQ's or parties which are a temptation.

So, I'm on track for my first 7 pounds off for which I get a sticker! Half way there!
